Some say the universe will freeze to death in trillions of years.
That’s more than I could count in my life, one second at a time.
It’s so far away that it doesn’t scare me.
Some say the sun will die in five billion years, maybe a little more.
Counting that one second at a time? Over one and a half centuries.
It’s so far away that it doesn’t scare me.
Some say the sun will boil our oceans away in one billion years.
One billion seconds is thirty-two years, almost. Well, that’s okay.
It’s so far away that it doesn’t scare me.
They say sea levels could rise twelve inches in the next seventy-five years,
as a best case scenario, and over three-fourths of Americans affected,
if that happened now.
Seventy-five seconds. Just over a minute.
Seventy-five days. Three and a half months.
Seventy-five years. Four generations,
And my child could be rocking his own great-grandchild in his arms.
I will be dead, but that scares me.
