About

For three decades, the Morgantown Writers Group (MWG) has been a hub for writers in north central West Virginia, working closely with organizations like the Morgantown Public Library, Monongalia Arts Center, Arts Mon, and WVU Press to sponsor workshops, public readings, and special literary events. Approximately 650 writers have participated in our twice-monthly program over the years. Our unique hybrid format, born out of necessity during the pandemic, allows us to connect with writers across the country and around the globe.

We welcome writers of all levels, from beginners to seasoned wordsmiths. Whether you’re just starting your writing journey or have a drawer full of manuscripts, you’ll find a supportive and free community here. We’re here to help you hone your skills so your writing can shine. While we embrace writers of all backgrounds, we are a group dedicated to helping our members achieve their writing goals, including publication. Active participation in critiques and a willingness to learn and grow are key to making the most of your membership.

Our members have earned numerous awards and accolades for their writing, and many have achieved publication in various journals and anthologies. MWG itself has published two anthologies, “Mist on the Mon” and “River and Stone,” showcasing the talent within our community.

We have held writers’ retreats in Alpine Lakes, Tygart Lake, and downtown Wheeling. We have also hosted smaller weekend writing getaways for our group members in Canaan Valley, Dolly Sods, Berkeley Springs, and Ohiopyle.

In addition to our regular meetings and retreats, MWG has a history of offering workshops on various aspects of writing, led by experienced instructors and published authors. Past workshops have covered topics such as humor in historical fiction, fourth person point of view, methods in developing flash fiction poetry, crafting strong first lines, and an panel of editors from The Metaworker Literary magazine. We are currently exploring opportunities to host more workshops in the future. Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming events!”
