Happily (A Fairy Tale)

by Edwina Pendarvis

The loveliest always gets away,
diamonds, glittering in her footprints,
fall behind her like a wedding veil.

The bluest beard of the slyest villain
is no match for her bright eyes, her clear skin,
fairest of the fair.

Unlocking the last room, she peeks
behind the velvet curtain
into the gloom, where the hunch-backed gnome
is just finishing a last gory bite
and wiping his greasy lips.

Only beauty can save her.
One freckle or mole,
one asymmetry;
and she’s doomed
to hang from a butcher’s hook
like an ex-wife
or be ground into meal for a giant’s bread.

She sings as she runs from the castle
and into the sea ever after.
